Introduction to the Hong Kong Office

While CNCF has been fund raising in Hong Kong for more than 12 years, our first "office" began in humble beginnings, namely in the basement of the home of our first Chairman Derek Smyth. In 2004 an office was formally established and we moved to a convenient and accessible space in the heart of Hong Kong in vibrant Wanchai. The Hong Kong office of the Christina Noble Children's Foundation focuses primarily on fund-raising efforts and managing the child sponsorship programmes in Vietnam and Mongolia. As a major fund-raising centre for the foundation, the office raises more than US$900,000 a year, and currently helps to manage 640 children under sponsorship through Hong Kong. As a small, grass-roots organization, CNCF Hong Kong has 1.5 paid staff and more than 30 active volunteers (including the Board of Directors) who run the day to day operations.

Local News

Like many foundations, CNCF relies on the generous contributions of sponsors who provide pro bono services which allow us to maximize the use of our fund raising dollars to further the foundation's goals. Over the years, we've found that in-kind services and pro-bono donations can be as valuable as cash donations. Recent examples of invaluable sponsorship pro bono donations include:

Leo Burnett's pro bono television award winning ad spots - valued at US$ 1MM - shown free of charge on satellite and cable channels region-wide.

Integra-IT who provide all IT and communications support for our office PCs, LAN and telephony.

LAM Construction enabled us to move from 6/F to 14/F in our current building with a two year rent subsidy allowing us to enlarge our space from a single to a double unit. This has allowed us to expand our volunteer staff and storage space.

Schools & Colleges

CNCF has a long-established relationship with many of the schools and colleges in Hong Kong, and considers this relationship a fundamental part of the Foundation. Schools have not only played a major role in fund-raising activities, but have also contributed vital help in projects such as the "Container of Hope" project. The relationship we have established with the schools is mutually beneficial, the children in Hong Kong are able to directly benefit children in Vietnam and Mongolia and in return are able to learn about countries in poverty and the issues faced by their populations, and what it means to be a global citizen with a responsibility to help those in need.

CNCF's Youth Ambassador Programme which was established in 2005 provides an opportunity for young people to experience volunteering at first hand, and learn how individuals and teams can make a positive difference to the lives of others. Ambassadors have been able to visit projects in Vietnam and Mongolia in order to assist directly and the programme fulfils the requirements of International Baccalaureate's community action component. The programme currently runs in Hong Kong International School, Chinese International School, West Island School and the Australian International School.

To find out more about how your school can get involved with CNCF call Eileen O'Connell on 2832 2186 or mail the Hong Kong office on hongkong@cncf.org.

Volunteers

Like any grass-roots foundation, volunteers are the life blood of our Hong Kong operation. We are blessed with an active and optimistic base of committed volunteers which is currently comprised of 26 regular contributors with others available to help with events and fairs. Our volunteers contribute in most every facet of our day to day operations, and are organised into the following teams: general administration, finance, corporate liaison, events, school liaison and marketing communications/PR.

If you have some time to spare and want to spend it in a meaningful way, why not consider volunteering at our office? We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can either contribute a skill or be trained to fill a need in our office. If you would like to know more about how you can contribute, please contact us at hongkong@cncf.org / 2832 2186.

Volunteer Position Vacancies

In order to strengthen and broaden our relationships with local schools and further develop the Youth Ambassador Programme, we are currently looking to recruit a minimum of 3 Schools Co-ordinator Volunteers in order to serve Hong Kong Island, the New Territories and Lantau Island.

The roles require liaison between the local schools and the CNCF office; raising awareness of CNCF within the school communities; disseminating information; assisting with events and fund raising etc. If you have a passion for working with children and want to reap the rewards of contributing to a hands-on role for an established charity, please contact us.

Susan Gaylard - visit to CNCF HCMC Sept 2009

I went to Ho Chi Minh City with images in my mind based on my vague recollection of descriptions I read in Christina's books some time ago so I was surprised and relieved to see that much must have changed there in the intervening years between Christina's arrival and our visit.

I did not see a dusty park opposite the Rex Hotel, but a beautifully laid out and manicured garden. It was difficult to picture hungry, dirty little children scrabbling there for ants to eat. The promise of renewal and ongoing life suggested by the greenery in that park were powerfully reinforced during our visit to the Social and Medical Centre.

The Centre is a lovely place, staffed with exuberant and welcoming people who so obviously care tremendously about each and every child that receives assistance there. The children seemed happy and it was a delight to spend time with them. Obviously each child has their own specific needs, which are dealt with on an individual basis. I enjoyed watching the children being children, and the fact that this is exactly what they were doing is testament to the Foundation's success in allowing them a childhood in such trying circumstances. Some of the circumstances I am ashamed to admit I previously had little knowledge of, but a trip to the War Remnants Museum soon provided me with much fuel for thought, and an increased respect for what the Vietnamese have been through, as well as the challenges these circumstances bring to the Foundation.

An enduring memory of the visit to the Social and Medical Centre was playing 'tag' with a couple of mobile and extremely engaging little ones. Whilst I was absorbed in this game, a little girl in a yellow dress quietly settled in my lap, and although she was disabled and had limited use of her hands, she sweetly and valiantly replaced my face mask time and again when one of the other children cheekily removed it, both of them laughing heartily at the fun of it all.

The trip to the Girls' Shelter was yet another inspiring and life-affirming outing. There was so much joy and pride evident in these young girls and young ladies. I was so impressed by their poise and confidence, which I doubt I possessed at their age, despite my privileged background. This showed me that the respect afforded these girls will surely go a long way to prepare them for a meaningful adult life.

I left HCMC with a renewed respect for what Christina began and through the years with the help of all involved has grown into a Foundation that truly strives to give these children a childhood, hope, respect and a far better future than they'd have without the Foundation.
