The walk began on a crisp, Southern Highlands morning at the very early hours of the morning - 6.30am! The team scrambled out of bed, weary eyed and met at Reception for the start of the 5km + walk around the magical Gibbergunya Reserve.
Along the walking paths, the team saw rocky outcrops, lichen clad boulders, and whilst we did not spot any wombats or echidnas, the flora and fauna of the preservation reserve was amazing. Steep with a profusion of gums, native trees, banksias and even the occasional mushrooms growing under the pine trees, the walk was enjoyed by all, and well worth the effort of getting up at the crack of dawn!
And of course, the walk was for a very worthy cause! The Christina Noble Children's Foundation is an international partnership of people dedicated to serving children in need of emergency and long-term medical care, nutritional, rehabilitation, educational opportunities, vocational training and job placement, as well as children at risk of sexual and economic exploitation.
The Foundation was established by Christina in 1991 in Ho Chi Minh City. Over 100 projects have been established during the past 26 years providing vital health services. Education is crucial to the growth and development of every child and is key to breaking the poverty trap. Without education children have no means to develop beyond the social sphere into which they are born, rendered unable to choose a direction in life. Education gives children a sense of worth, hope and an opportunity. In the short-term, school provides a refuge from danger and from poverty but long-term it is the means by which a child ca permanently escape these.
In 1997, Christina extended the work of her Foundation into Mongolia after an investigative visit to Ulaanbaatar where she was shocked to discover thousands of sick and destitute street children living in horrendous conditions beneath the city streets in manholes struggling to survive against the harsh winter temperatures which can reach as low as minus 40 degrees.
The 'Walk for a Good Cause' raised a total of $1,010 for the Foundation! A tremendous result!! A very big THANK YOU to all of our walkers and Acelity Australia looks forward to presenting a cheque to the Christina Noble Children's Foundation later this month.
