We knew about Tuan when she was 5 years old and her parents were too afraid to send her to school because of Thalassemia. Tuan has one brother who also used to receive support from our Education Scholarship Programme but had to give up his schooling dreams due to declining health, which needs 2 blood-transfusions every month. So Tuan’s parents feel lucky that she is still able to maintain at mainstream primary school. Tuan is very vulnerable to this disease and needs very close monitoring. She also needs a special and nutritious diet as per doctor’s instructions and even only a small fever could be harmful to her health. Tuan is too young to be fully aware of her illness and things get more trouble for her parents whenever she falls sick. She also knows that she is not as healthy as other children so she tries harder and always dreams to be a nurse when she grows up. Since she was admitted to our Education Sponsorship Programme, Tuan receives our monthly support with an extra 25 dollars per month for her special diet. We feel very grateful that she is strong enough to remain at school, enjoy her hobbies such as playing with toys and doing drawings.
For her poor parents, this support is not only helping them with Tuan’s tuition fees but also to giving back a childhood for their children which is to go to school and play like other children. Like so many disadvantaged children in Vietnam, this lovely girl does not have fancy dreams apart from being healthy even though she is only 6 years old. We understand it will take time and more effort to have a proper treatment for her illness but till now we feel privileged by seeing her so keen and enjoying her schooling with a stable health.
