Sandra Carwood, who recently completed a second stint as a volunteer, spoke to us about her time at The Centre.
Sandra explained that she had first volunteered at The Centre in 2008. “At this time I was taking some time off from my job as a speech and language therapist to go travelling,” she said. “I really wanted to spend some of this time volunteering, and when I started to look into it, CNCF just seemed like the perfect fit.”
Sandra said that her experience volunteering in 2008 had far exceeded her expectations and working with the children had had a profound effect on her. So much so, that when she married in 2013, she and new husband Will included a stop-off at The Centre as part of their Honeymoon trip. She recalled, “As soon as I went back I knew that a short visit was never going to be enough and that I wanted a chance to volunteer again.”
With the support of CNCF and the backing of husband Will, Sandra started to make plans for her second spell with CNCF in Vietnam. Her friends, family and work colleagues were enthusiastic in helping Sandra to fundraise. “I was completely overwhelmed by people’s generosity,” she said. “Some of the money was used to buy toys for the children and I’m incredibly excited to think how far the rest can go and the positive impact that it’s going to have.”
Sandra still works as a speech and language therapist back in her home of Ireland. Using her skills, knowledge and experience of working with children, she was able to connect with the children in The Centre and fulfil the volunteer role of helping the children develop and grow through play.
“I'll always have a special relationship with CNCF and Vietnam, in particular,” Sandra said. “I would volunteer again in a heartbeat, and I would recommend to anyone that might be considering it to make it happen, you won't regret it! Even beyond that though, I hope there are other ways I can continue to support from afar!”
CNCF relies on the help and support of experienced and dedicated volunteers who are able and willing to go the extra mile in a demanding environment. We are extremely grateful to all our volunteers for their support.
