This was an incredible achievement for our two young athletes, who have been regularly practicing Taekwondo since lessons were re-introduced at our Ger Village in April 2015.
Our professional coach, Battulga, who is passionate about the benefits of teaching Taekwondo to children, selected Ganzorig and Oyuntuya based on the level of commitment, self-discipline, and skill they had shown throughout the year.
When our children found out they had been chosen to represent their country at one of the sport’s main championship events they couldn’t believe it and told us that ‘it can only be a dream’. But as the day to leave drew closer the children grew more excited and began to realise that their dream might actually come true – and it did!
We are proud to say that after competing with children from all over the world Ganzorig and Oyuntuya both received bronze medals, an achievement that our coach attributed to the tremendous strength of character, skill, and focus they displayed throughout the challenging and highly competitive event.
Our Psychologist, Nomin, who accompanied the children and Battulga to Korea said that she was ‘proud and inspired’ by our young people, who as a result of the trip have not only grown as athletes but have also ‘had their minds opened to a world that is much bigger than they had ever thought.’
Here are Ganzorig and Oyuntuya’s thoughtful reflections on their time in Korea….
