With so many people living in deprivation and with the imminent winter battle ahead where temperatures will regularly drop below an unimaginable -40°C. Our Give-a-Ger programme provides a lifeline to children and their families that they could otherwise have only dreamed of.
To decide which families would receive the first donated gers our social worker Khongoroo carried out numerous home visits to assess the living conditions of various families and gain an in-depth understanding of their individual situations.
After careful consideration among our team, the two families who were in the most urgent need were chosen and would receive a new home donated by the amazing students at the Chinese International School, Hong Kong.
One of the families selected was a mother, her two daughters and her grandchild. For this family their new ger could quite possibly help to save their lives.
At the time, the children were living in an extremely abusive environment at their stepfather’s home. He would frequently demand for the mother and children to leave and find a new place to live, and would often use physical and mental abuse to control the family and keep them in a state of fear and subservience. With no other family members to turn to, and with the bitter cold winter months fast-approaching, the mother was trapped in an impossible situation and was helpless to protect her children.
When Khongoroo contacted the mother to inform her that we would be giving the family a new ger, she broke down in total disbelief, overwhelmed with emotion by what she described as a miracle. She would finally be able to provide her family with the home she had always dreamed of and a place where her children could lay their heads at night free from fear of abuse, and surrounded by the love, warmth, and protection every mother wishes for her children.
The day we gave this family their new ger we also gave them a new life, and as the CIS students, the family and our CNCF team worked together to build their new home, we could all feel in our hearts the truth behind Christina’s words:
“The only way forward in a confused and bitter world is to find common ground as human beings. That would be the first thing: to communicate, human being to human being.” – Christina Noble.
